Studying abroad in Spain, I was tasked with designing a market in the heart of Sevilla, a place that exudes history. Located on the banks of the river that saw so many ships set out to explore the world, the intention of this project was to draw from the rich local history to create a site that could bridge dichotomies. Old / new, local / international, a space that could make tangible the concepts that make a community flourish. shared spaces for sharing meals, learning, interacting, resting, and watching life go on before our eyes with the people around us.
The design proposed a further extension to the market, permeating through the city in a series of pop up bike stands that travel to other parks, and spread the seeds that unite the community, bringing with them good spirits and putting nutrition within reach of more sectors of the community.
This semester abroad was very different for our class due to the unfortunate circumstances that came about during the design process, otherwise known as the pandemic. through all the trials and tribulations I believe the project came out successfully, although I always wonder what could have been if we had stayed those extra months in Sevilla.
